Bexley The Village of Bexley officially came into being at a special election in the summer of 1908. The first council meeting was held in August at Capital University. Population of the village numbered about 1,000. Frank P. Holtzman was elected the village's first mayor, and the first ordinances passed reflected the times, prohibiting residents from allowing cattle to graze on village property, outlawing intoxication and assault, and banning the discharging of firearms.Shortly after incorporation, Columbus sued the village, contending that Bexley was annexed territory and subject to Columbus taxes. The village fought the suit and the case was finally settled by the Ohio Supreme Court which ruled that Bexley was a separate and legally incorporated village and beyond the reach of Columbus taxes.By 1915, council meetings were being held in the basement of the new Main Street School (located across the street from Capital's Seminary, west of College). The village's only telephone was located in a barber shop across from the university; the town marshal was given a bicycle to replace his horse; and a vacant lot had been acquired for the construction of a municipal building. The total assets of the village were the lot, the bike, one road scraper, and a wheelbarrow.By 1921, Bexley's population had grown to 2,000; the growth promised to continue; and five streets had been paved. Mayor Stephen Ludwig undertook to control future expansion by appointing the first zoning commission and revising the building code. In 1922, Montrose School was finished as the high school and Cassingham Elementary School followed in 1927. Underground electric lighting was installed in 1923, and the first municipal building was constructed two years later. During the decade of the 1920's, Bexley's population more than tripled. Bexley reached the required 5,000 residents necessary to become a city in 1928, but could not be certified until after the 1930 national census was official. The village adopted a city charter in 1931 and formally became the City of Bexley on January 1, 1932.William A. Schneider was elected mayor in 1935 and began setting aside revenues to build a new city hall which was to occupy the same ground as the original one-room municipal building. The new City Hall was completely paid for when it was dedicated on April 5, 1952. Schneider retired fifteen years later, after 32 years in office.Since 1967, Bexley, under the stewardship of Mayors Ken McClure, John Loehnert, and David Madison, has matured into an intimate community of just over thirteen thousand, distinctive in the natural beauty of its 2.5 square miles of tree-lined streets and its extensive parks network, and distinguished by the quality of its city services, its community involvement and enthusiasm, and its award-winning and highly regarded school system. If you are interested in a Bexley Ohio Condo or a Bexley Ohio single family home, be sure to contact The Lubinsky Team for a list of the the hottest Bexley properties on the market!

Gahanna Gahanna was founded along the Big Walnut Creek in 1849 by John Clark of Ross County from 800 acres of land that his father, Joseph Clark, had purchased from Governor Worthington in 1814. Clark named his property the Gahanna Plantation, from which the City of Gahanna derives its name. The name Gahanna is derived from a Native American word for three creeks joining into one and is the former name of the Big Walnut Creek. The City of Gahanna's Official Seal refers to this confluence of three creeks with the inscription "Three In One". Gahanna maintained a considerable rivalry with the town of Bridgeport. Located directly across Granville Street from Gahanna and also along the banks of the Big Walnut Creek, Bridgeport was founded in 1853 by Jesse Baughman, a former Franklin County Commissioner. The two towns eventually put aside their differences and merged into one. They adopted the name Gahanna as there was already another town of Bridgeport in Ohio. In March of 1881, 55 citizens of Gahanna petitioned Franklin County to incorporate the village. The incorporation was granted in June and was recorded on August 8th, 1881. The Village then held its first mayoral election and on October 6, 1881, swore in its first mayor, L. John Neiswander. If you are interested in a Gahanna Ohio Condo or a Gahanna Ohio single family home, be sure to contact The Lubinsky Team for a list of the the hottest Gahanna properties on the market!

Hilliard: In 1852, John Reed Hilliard bought ten acres of farmland in western Franklin County from Hoseah High and Abraham Wendell. Geographically, the Hilliard area is between Big Darby Creek on the west and the Scioto River on the east. Originally called Hilliards Station, the town grew around the railroad route of the Piqua and Indiana Railroad station, which bisected the former Hilliard farmland. Hilliard?s Station served as an ideal shipping point for agricultural products going to market and supplies coming to the farmers in the area. The original Hilliard area was platted by John Hilliard on September 1, 1853. Until the mid 20th century, the railroad station and Main Street were the town center. In 1854, a post office was established in Hilliards Station and the word Station was dropped from the town name. The Village of Hilliard became incorporated on July 13, 1869 with a population of 280 residents. In 1886 the first railroad station was located on the north side of the tracks, west of Main Street, and remained there until 1962 when all railroad services ceased. The original train station has been restored and remains in Hilliards historical Weaver Park. The original platted area contained a mix of residences and businesses of varying ages and architecture. The construction of three large residential subdivisions in the 1950s brought explosive growth to Hilliard. The connection to the Columbus regional sewer and water systems in the 1960s opened up the area to development. The Village of Hilliard gained city status officially from the Secretary of State of Ohio, by attaining a population of 5,633 on December 12, 1960. With the completion of the I-270 outer belt in the 1980s, a second wave of explosive growth came to the area. Land uses in Hilliard continue to be a mix of residential and commercial development. A rich heritage of residential structures and architectural styles can be found in the historic district along Norwich Street. The City of Hilliard looks towards the future by continuing its economic development efforts with commercial growth while retaining the charm of its historic district and continuing to maintain the friendly atmosphere that make Hilliard a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Historically, Hilliard is known as the Home of the Franklin County Fair. For further information on the history of Hilliard contact Northwest Franklin County Historical Society, 4162 Avery Road, 777-4852. Pataskala The first settler to the area which was to become known as Pataskala was David Heron, who was living here in 1805 when Richard Conine and his wife Sarah visited the area. Richard Conine, who was to become known as the "Father of Pataskala", liked what he saw, and when he returned home to New Jersey, he arranged to purchase 2,000 acres of land here. He returned to this area in 1821 to live and built the first grist mill in the area at the south end of town, and prior to 1850, platted a village which he called Conine. However, by the end of 1850, he had sold most of his land, much of it to Jess Stoneman Green, and it was Green who actually put the village of Pataskala on the map. Green laid out lots and sold them, built buildings for businesses, and donated land for schools and churches. In 1851, the village of Pataskala received its first Post Office, and controversy grew over the name of "Conine" until finally the name "Pataskala", which is an Indian word meaning Licking, was decided upon and from that point the village continued to grow until it was finally incorporated in 1891.
In 1994 Lima Township and the Village of Pataskala voters agreed to establish a merger commission to research a possible merger. In 1995, the citizens voted unanimously to accept the merger proposal, and as of January 19, 1997, the Secretary of State declared Pataskala to be of city status. The City of Pataskala encompasses 39 square miles of territory. Its boundaries begin
at the Franklin/ Licking County lines on the west and extend to past Watkins road on the east. The northern boundary is south of CR. 25, Morse Road, and Jersey Township.
